Life and success are the sum of your choices.

7 proven strategies to help you make better decisions (and overcome biases):

1/ Broaden your options

Don't box yourself into an either-or situation. Instead of thinking, "Should I do this or that?", ask yourself, "What else could I do?" Exploring more options can lead to better solutions.

2/ Test your ideas

Our gut feelings aren't always right. Try things out on a small scale to see what actually works. For example, if you're considering a new career, start with a side project or freelance work in that field.

3/ Take a step back

Emotions can cloud our judgment. Give yourself some distance to think clearly. Ask, "What would I advise a friend to do?" or consider how you'll feel about this decision in 10 days, 10 months, or 10 years.

4/ Plan for surprises

Things don't always go as expected. Imagine if your decision didn't work out—what might have gone wrong? Thinking about this now (premortem) can help you prepare and adapt.

5/ Avoid rash decisions

Big choices made in the heat of the moment can lead to regret. Sleep on it, talk it over with someone you trust, and give yourself time to reflect.

6/ Learn from success

Instead of just fixing problems, look at what's already working well. Think about past successes and how you can apply those lessons now.

7/ Set reminders to reevaluate

It's easy to go on autopilot. Set up checkpoints or "tripwires" in advance that prompt you to review your decision. For example, "If I don't see progress in three months, I'll try a different approach."

These insights are inspired by Chip and Dan Heath’s "Decisive: How to Make Better Choices in Life and Work" and brought to you by Omar’s Desk.

PS: Success isn’t about perfect decisions—it’s about making them work for you, no matter the outcome.
