You don’t have to like power, but you can’t afford to ignore it.

Master these 7 rules of power to advance your career (and shape your future):

1/ Get out of your own way

Stop believing power is "dirty" or wrong. Your reluctance to seek power doesn't make the world more fair - it just leaves power in the hands of others. Embrace your ambition.

2/ Break the rules (strategically)

Success often means coloring outside the lines. While others play it safe, look for smart ways to stand out. Every industry norm is an opportunity for disruption.

3/ Appear powerful

Perception creates reality. Stand tall, speak confidently, take up space. Your presence shapes how others respond to you. Project the power you want to possess.

4/ Build your network

Power flows through relationships. Focus on building connections with influential people before you need them. Help others first, and they'll be eager to help you later.

5/ Ask for what you want

Your work needs a voice. Learn to advocate for yourself with confidence and grace.  Make bold requests. You'll be surprised how often people say yes simply because you had the courage to ask.

6/ Defend your resources

Be strategic about your commitments, energy, and influence. Setting clear boundaries isn't selfish. Sustainable impact requires sustainable practices.

7/ Use power to help others

The ultimate purpose of power isn't personal gain - it's positive impact. Use your influence to open doors for others, champion important causes, and create meaningful change.

These insights are from "7 Rules of Power" by Jeffrey Pfeffer and brought to you by Omar's Desk.

PS: Power isn't good or bad - it's a tool. What matters is how you use it.
