5 common promotion mistakes you may be making:
(and how to fix them Today)
1. Outcome Over Process
↳Think of your promotion as an outcome. Obsess over and act on the inputs: the skills you need to acquire, the experiences you need to demonstrate, the showcasing of your achievements, and the feedback you need to incorporate.
2. Not Communicating Aspirations
↳Clearly and explicitly communicate your career objectives with your manager and skip-level(s). For example, are you aspiring for a lateral move, a change in job family, or progression to the next level? Periodically review these aspirations for progress and changes.
3. Not Taking Ownership
↳Demonstrate your commitment towards career growth by initiating and executing a career growth plan. This plan should define your development goals over the next 1-2 quarters. Leverage mentors and your manager(s) for review and support.
4. Thinking Your Work Will Speak for Itself
↳While doing great work is table stakes, making yourself and your work strategically visible is equally important. Regularly review your work in progress and deliverables with others, with a clear intent to improve, learn, and scale the impact on the organization.
5. Thinking You Need to Grow Your Career by Yourself
↳You are not alone. Career growth takes a village. Leverage peers, mentors, managers, and coaches. Leverage others for inspiration, guidance, lessons, perspective, support, and opportunities. Remember, though, that your journey is unique to you.

PS: Remember, in this non-linear career journey, the only relevant comparison is to who you were yesterday.
